How algorithms on dating apps are contributing to racism in our love lives
But until recently, there was no way to measure how this racialized sexual discrimination — also known as sexual racism — impacted the well-being of gay and bisexual men of color using mobile apps and dating websites to search for sexual and romantic partners. Racialized sexual discrimination, broadly speaking, refers to the exclusion or conversely, fetishization of certain racial groups over another.
It is a phenomenon that explores the overlap between racial and gender stereotypes, and its consequences on interracial dating. This, say, researchers, is a relatively new area of study which explains the need to measure its psychological impact. To this end, Ryan Wade, an assistant professor in the School of Social Work at the University of Illinois, and Gary Harper, a professor of health behavior and health education at the University of Michigan, developed a scale to assess these consequences of racism.
Upon administering a survey that incorporated this scale, Wade and Harper found that racialized sexual discrimination negatively impacted the self-esteem and overall psychological health of racial and ethnic minorities in addition to instigating feelings of shame, humiliation, and inferiority.

LONDON Thomson Reuters Foundation – Gay dating apps are scrambling to remove ethnicity filters in a bid to tackle racism, as violent protests over the killing of a black man in police custody rocked the United States for a second week. Using the hashtag BlackLivesMatter, Grindr, which allows its more than 4 million daily users to choose between five options, including black, Asian and Middle Eastern, said on Monday that it would remove the filters from its next release.
His death caused outrage across a nation that is politically and racially divided as it counts down to presidential elections in November, reigniting protests that have flared repeatedly in recent years over police killings of black Americans. Dating apps have long been plagued by accusations of sexual racism, as users have been allowed to choose which race they want to meet. Jevan Hutson, one of the authors of the Cornell study, said online dating sites and apps should be designed in ways that do not fuel such racist comments or prejudice.
Hinge and OkCupid, both of which have ethnicity filters, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. More importantly, it’s inspired real-life conversations about what it means to be a young South Asian person trying to navigate marriage, love — and yes, parental expectations.
Many young South Asian Australians told ABC Life they’ve seen aspects of their real lives being played out in the show, but that of course, one reality program could never capture the myriad experiences of people across many communities, language groups, religions, genders, sexualities, traditions and castes of the subcontinental region.
Like many immigrants, my parents had come to the United States with very little and worked low—paying jobs while raising my sister and me, sacrificing all of their time and money to give us a good education. In response, Chinese cities have been quarantined, borders have been sealed, and travel has been banned.
While panic about a sudden, deadly virus is to be expected, some fears — especially in North America and the West — have been based on something other than health. The panic has exposed a deep-seated xenophobia, and with it, a symptom of its own has surfaced: hostility toward East Asian people. While some efforts to contain the virus seem fairly practical — like the suspension of flights to mainland China — others seem to be unfairly targeting Asian people.
